Happy New Yakkers

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

We got a pair of kayaks recently, and today we made it out on to the water for the first time.

Nobody fell in, and we came back with all the gear we left with, even counting the drive time with Melissa’s kayak on the roof of the car. We paddled about 2 miles over about three hours, and had a darn good time when we were on the shady side of the water. Hooray!

Yes, we’re still alive. Time disappears in a hurry in a big new house. :-)

The Fox station here has an unusual promotional spot: Going in to the 10pm time slot, when everyone else is starting their late newscast, they air a quickie that says “No news is good news,” and off into more comedies.

Breakdown

We finally got around to watching last week’s Iron Chef America, battle onion (Flay vs. Bernstein). What caught our attention was how Alton Brown seemed to be on the verge of breaking out laughing almost every time the camera cut to him. He was also slipping back in to his southern accent during this episode, which is uncharacteristic as well. I guess there was something going on off-camera during this episode, but there’s no hint of it that we ever saw, and I haven’t found any mention of this on the web anywhere. The only thing we could figure is that it was related to how sluggish and clumsy Bobby Flay was in this episode. If, through the miracle of Google, someone who has an explanation reads this, please let us in on the joke.

What was that again?

While waiting for Melissa at lunch today, I was groovin’ with something on WRFG‘s World Party show. The song was definitely not English, but when the DJ told the interviewer coming on the air next the title of the song, it sure sounded like “When you killahr.” Hmm, another happy song about killing people? No, actually it translates as “Raise your spirits.” I’m glad he spelled that out for us English speakers listening in. :-)

Euphoria in a Cup

Thursday, February 17th, 2005

I’ve been meaning to write in this goofy blog thing for a good week or so, but working until about 7:30 every night for the past two weeks makes me not want to look at a computer in my spare time. Anyhoo, I went out to Starbucks with a couple of my Turkish coworkers after work last week for a much needed caffeine fix. Affixed to the walls in every imaginable way were ads for their new hot chocolate drink called Chantico. Being the sucker I am for chocolate and creatively placed advertisements, I ordered a cup. Apparently, it is quite a popular drink, because I got the last one for the day. The lady handed me the tiny little $4.00 cup of steaming chocolate, and I sat down at the table and took a sip.

Oh. My. Gosh.

It was like drinking a melted truffle. Seriously. I could not have made a drink that chocolatey even if I melted straight chocolate chips and drank them. Evil, evil Starbucks! They knew that as soon as I had just one Chantico that I would be hooked. I will have to consume one of these things at least once a month. Oh, the sweet euphoria.

Don’t read this if you have work to do.

Melissa ran across Just Letters (aka “Someone keeps stealing my letters…”) today. All I can say is it’s cool, and I hope there’s not something you’re supposed to be doing right now. :-)
